Here’s Why Everyone Should Own a Fast & Affordable 50mm F/1.8 Lens, AKA a "Nifty Fifty" (VIDEO)
This morning we posted a story suggesting that high-quality vintage lenses often outperform modern mid-level or kit lenses when used with adapters on the latest DSLRs.The video below illustrates a possible exception to the rule, in the form of Canon’s inexpensive and versatile EF 50mm f/1.8 STM.
Long known as the “Nifty Fifty,” this lens has gone through several iterations, and the current version is really hard to beat for around $125. It’s both compact and lightweight, features a metal lens mount (unlike earlier versions), boasts crisp autofocus, and has a seven-bladed circular aperture for some pretty sweet bokeh.
With its f/1.8 maximum aperture, the Nifty Fifty is a great choice for low-light photography. And when used on APS-C cameras, it delivers an effective focal length of 80mm.
So watch the following video and see why photographer Peter McKinnon insists that the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is “the most underrated lens everyone needs.” You can find more interesting tips and tricks on McKinnon’s YouTube channel, and be sure to look at this morning’s story about using high-end vintage lenses on modern digital cameras.
