Arguably, the biggest camera news at this year’s photokina show in Cologne, Germany was the announcement of the new Fujifilm GFX, a medium format mirrorless camera, which was unveiled to much fanfare on Monday. Shutterbug was one of a handful of media outlets to get our hands on a prototype of the 51.4-megapixel GFX and try it out for about half an hour in a conference room at the show.

The new super wide angle Distagon T* f/2.8 15mm lens for Canon and Nikon mounts is neither lightweight nor inexpensive (1.6 lb for Nikon, 1.8 lb for Canon mount, $2950) but what you get from this manual focus lens is exceptional image quality and facility that is perhaps unmatched by any other lens in its focal length class. With a 95mm filter thread and integral and fully compatible lens shade, the lens offers an extraordinary 110-degree angle of view that is pleasure to work with on a wide variety of subjects. The fast f/2.8 aperture is matched on the narrow end by a minimum aperture of f/22, which at 15mm means there’s potential for extraordinary depth of field effects using the 10-inch closest focusing range. While decidedly not a portrait lens, the 15mm is ideal for landscape, street photography and creative advertising work, as well as architectural and urban photography, as I discovered in mybrief time working with it.

Nikon’s Lindsay Silverman gave us the scoop on two new Nikkor lenses that were making their debuts at the PhotoPlus Expo show in New York City last week: the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR zoom and PC Nikkor 19mm f/4E ED tilt-shift lens.

During a Canon event today before the start of the photokina show in Cologne, Germany tomorrow, we got some hands-on time with the long awaited Canon EOS 7D Mark II. Even though our time with the 7D II was brief — we were pretty much loaned the camera and allowed to shoot for a few minutes — we got a pretty good sense of how this APS-C-based digital SLR performs. In short, it’s feels like a mini machine gun.

After getting to shoot with the 64MP Leica S3, we paid a visit to the Phase One booth at the photokina show in Germany this week where we got a chance to try out the 150MP XF IQ4 medium format camera system. Notice a pattern here?

Though it was announced late last month, the new 24-megapixel Pentax KP DSLR made its official debut at the WPPI show in Las Vegas this week and we put our grubby little paws all over this compact yet rugged APS-C sensor-based DSLR.

Fujifilm was showing off its new toys at photokina today and we got some hands-on time with these latest X-series cameras and lenses. Initially announced on September 10th, the Fujifilm X100T and XT-1 Graphite Silver cameras, and Fujinon XF50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR and XF56mm F1.2 R APD lenses continue to build on Fuji’s compact and retro-style (Fuji would say “classic" style) X-Series line.

Hasselblad introduced its latest mirrorless medium format camera this morning, the 50-megapixel X1D II 50C, which is the follow-up to the X1D from a few years ago. After this morning's launch, we got some hands-on time with an early, pre-production version of the X1D II 50C at a special press event at Hasselblad's NY Experience Studio.

The recent CES show in Las Vegas saw the debut of the Panasonic GH5S, a mirrorless camera designed specifically to shoot in low light conditions. We got to see the GH5S in action at the show and shot the below video featuring Panasonic Lumix USA product manager Sean Robinson and the much buzzed about camera.

We’re currently at the WPPI show in Las Vegas where the brand new Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 lens is making its debut. Because, unlike in years past, WPPI is scheduled prior to the big CP+ Imaging Show in Japan, breaking product news has been light so far.
