Last fall we ran a preview of our favorite early entries in the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA), and now the stunning winning images have been announced. The photos you see here are the best shots in each of the contest’s 10 open categories, including our lead photo by UK photographer Tim Cornbill who took top honors in the Architecture category.

The international SWPA contest is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017 and the category winners were selected from among 105,000 entries from across the globe. The amazing image above by Jianguo Gong of China won the Culture category and if you look closely you’ll see it depicts 1,300 people practicing Tai-Chi.

SWPA is the world’s largest photography competition and the 10 category winners received a trip to London and a $5,000 cash prize. Lise Johansson of Denmark used a subtle color palette to create her winning image in the Enhanced category (above).

These winning images in the SWPA competition will be featured in an exhibition at London’s Somerset House from April 21-May 7, 2017. The above photograph by Camilo Diaz of Colombia depicts a goal-scoring moment in an underwater rugby match and won top honors in the Motion category.

The London exhibition will also feature a special dedication to British photographer Martin Parr—recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize. Hiroshi Tanita of Japan made the beautiful winter photo above, which was the winner in the Nature category.

SWPA also announced winners of National Awards from 66 countries, which you can view on the competition’s website. The above image was named best image in the open competition’s Portrait category. The simple portrait was made by Alexander Vinogradov of Russia.

Sergey Dibtsev, another Russian photographer, won the Still Life category for the image you see above. It seems an odd choice for a “still life” image, but it’s beautiful nonetheless.

The Street category was won by Greek photographer Constantinos Sofikitis who made the back-and-white image above.

One of our favorite photographs in the 2017 competition is the above image made by Ralph Graf of Germany who used muted tones to capture his winning shot in the Travel category. The striking image below of flamingos in Namibia by Alessandra Meniconzi of Switzerland won the Wildlife category.
