What’s Better for Portrait Photography: A DSLR or Mirrorless Camera? (VIDEO)
Over the past few years there’s been a shift from DSLR cameras to mirrorless models among amateurs and pros alike. But as you’ll see in the video below, it’s still a bit premature to ring the death knell for the trusty DSLR—at least for certain applications.
Here we’re going to take a close look at how both platforms perform when it come to shooting portraits, with a little help from an experienced wedding photographer based in Melbourne, Australia. Ben Bach also shoots portraits and event photography, and specializes in tutorials and behind-the scenes photography videos, with a YouTube following of over 42,000 shooters.
In this episode you’ll watch Bach make portraits with a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR, a Sony A7R II mirrorless camera, and an assortment of lenses. Then you can compare the results from each camera at three different focal length and judge for yourself as to which system performed best.
While watching the 11-minute tutorial you’ll pick up valuable tips on posing, composition, exposure and other camera settings, and see which lenses work best for different types of portraits. And there’s a full list of the gear Bach uses in the description below the video.
Bach draws a number of direct comparisons between the two systems used in the video, and provides his take on the pros and cons on how DSLRs and mirrorless cameras perform for portraiture. So take a look at his images as see if you agree.
You can find more helpful tutorials on Bach’s YouTube channel, and in a tutorial of his we posted last week, with 14 simple tips on shooting breathtaking portraits. And we encourage you to check out another recent video, with five good reasons to buy a DSLR in 2020.
