Sony's not getting out of the APS-C mirrorless camera game. That was the message at a Sony press conference in New York City this morning where the company unveiled two new APS-C sensor-based mirrorless cameras: the 24.2MP Sony A6600 and the entry-level Sony A6100 models.

Here are some tips I discovered when researching this month’s column. One was from my wife who uses this technique all the time—smile! And you know what, people smile back, making you appear friendly and non-threatening. Just bought a 200mm f/2.8 lens for my Nikon D300s for $99! Incredibly it’s only 3.1 inches long and it’s as sharp as a handful of carpet tacks. It’s used, sure, and it’s manual focus. But hey! It was made by Nikon. It’s a real Nikon lens and it’s just one example of the fantastic bargains that are available to those who know what to look for.

Canon has introduced its first telephoto zoom lens for its EOS R and EOS RP full-frame mirrorless cameras and it's a doozy: a RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM lens, which is equivalent to 10x of optical zoom.

Every company that makes lenses usually designs a few that are ideal for portraiture. The trend these days for studio and boudoir portraits is toward fast prime lenses, while zooms remain popular for location and wedding photography. Wide-angle lenses may get you closer to the subject but perspective distortion exaggerates a subject’s nose and ears.

We wrote about the new Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 (Model A022) lens when it was announced at the beginning of the month but it was only at the photokina show in Germany last week that we got to see this impressive superzoom in person. And man, is it big!
