How many times a day do we walk past those things that usually do not draw our attention? Many times they are the ordinary, the simplistic, and the dime a dozen, that we let go unnoticed. Not so for the passionate photographer.

I am amazed how I can be so focused on those objects that everyone misses. Before I gained an interest in photography, I...

Does it seem that your hard drive is filling up with digital image files faster than the speed of light? Where in the world is that shot you took last summer of Steve water-skiing, and whatever happened to those great photos from the trip to Death Valley that you want to e-mail to a friend? Whether your digital pictures are from a digital camera, scans from prints, negatives, or...

Photography is a wide-ranging field that engenders passion in its practitioners, and like all great forms of expression creates opinions formed through experience and reflection. In its early days one of the great debates was: Is Photography Art? This was the subject of many essays and heated discussions among players and spectators. Our Picture This! assignment this month was Sunrise/Sunset and we received a year's worth of risings and settings from our very talented readers. The images showed a wide range of subjects and locations, from Alaska to the coast of Maine, with rainbows and the dazzling light as it moved in and around everything from peaceful harbors to the great cities of our land.

Small Camera Case Plus
An interesting new idea in multipurpose cases comes from Norazza, called the Ape Case Tri-Fold Traveler. At first glance, it looks like a case suitable for a small compact 35mm or digital camera, but when a hook-and-loop fastener is opened it expands to a 15.5" length having a protector organizer function with no less than 20...

In autumn of 2001, as I was traveling along Florida's back roads, I drove by a small carnival. Passing amusement merrily occupied a parcel of land. Backing up, I found myself in a place last visited in childhood. Time and the constraints of ordinary life lost their urgency, and illusion became reality. We were all...

I was talking with an editor friend of mine recently. He sees a lot of photographs--most of them taken by professionals, but some by amateurs. Every once in a while he's involved in judging amateurs' photos for online photo contests. He was telling me that many of the contest pictures he sees are...

Many of Pamela Hawkes' images seem familiar, a house we may have seen or even lived in at some time, a bouquet of flowers arranged for our dining room table, or the image of a woman's upper torso, her hands folded in her lap. But though the objects seem connected to us in some way there is a...
