Venus Optics Just Introduced the Weirdest Lens You’ve Ever Seen: The Laowa 24mm f/14 Macro

Venus Optics is a Chinese lens manufacturer that has been producing some unique and highly regarded lenses under its Laowa brand. But their new 24mm f/14 Relay 2X Macro lens, previewed at photokina, may have changed the meaning of “unique” forever—at least as far as optics are concerned.

One feature of this crazy lens, as you can see from the top photo from ePhotozine, is it’s extremely long snout-like barrel that should be rather effective for photographing tiny macro subjects in tight places. Below is another image of this "anteater" lens in action from the Venus Optics - Laowa Facebook page.

And, no, the f/14 isn’t a typo so you’ll need a lot of light. But the 2:1 reproduction ratio is quite impressive, and the lens is designed to be resistant to extreme temperatures. The “unique” Laowa 24mm f/14 Relay 2X Macro is full-frame compatible and is expected to be released in 2017 in mounts for Canon and Nikon.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but we expect the lens to show up on the Venus Optics/Laowa website shortly. You can also keep your eye on their Facebook page.
