The photo was taken from a small boat on the Zambezi River with a Nikon D600 camera and a Nikkor 80-400 mm VR lens at 400 mm. The exposure (hand-held) was f/8 and 1/1000 sec (ISO 800). Most of the crocs we saw were immobile, snoozing in the sun along the shore. When they did awake, they usually moved into the water too suddenly to permit a sharp action photo. We were lucky this time -- as we approached, the snoozing croc awoke and whirled about to greet us. Image by Irwin H. Segel.
