A Mill Yard Crane was common at Sugar Factories on Hawaii Island. It’s purpose was to “feed” stock piled sugar cane into the mill conveyor during “direct feed” interruptions (lunch, harvesting equipment breakdowns, etc.) This gear (and pinion) was located in the base of the crane and enabled it to rotate. It is laying on its’ side. Hakalau, HI
