November through February bring an exciting time to the Conowingo Dam area on the Susquehanna River in Maryland. Eagles have a year round presence here but in the winter they seem to outnumber the local residents. Photographers from all over the United States come to shoot them here because it is virtually a guarantee they will get a show. This particular day in November I watched for 6 consecutive hours in pretty chilly temperatures but was able to catch a few photos of these incredible raptors pursuing their meals and then preparing them. Every once in a while when a fish is grabbed other eagles will challenge the catcher for his prey. When the fish is caught, the eagles will do a "fish check" by taking their heads and turning it under their body to make sure they have what they sought after.
This photo shows the fright on the fishes face as he's whisked away.
