One lesson all outdoor photographers learn is that there’s a big difference between a beautiful location and a great landscape photograph. That’s because no matter how gorgeous the setting, if you arrive on a cloudless day with poor light and drab colors, there’s not much you can do to capture a stunning shot.

Shutterbug columnist Scott Kelby is a Photoshop and Lightroom master. But in the below software tips video, Kelby shows how you don’t need to be an expert to fix a common problem in your images.

Most photographers are familiar with using Vibrance, Hue/Saturation, and White Balance tools to adjust or enhance the colors of an image. The interesting video below takes a different approach, with a little-known Color tool that’s available in Lightroom and Photoshop Camera Raw.

Ask a bunch of photographers about the first thing they look at when opening images in Photoshop or Lightroom, and you’re likely to hear, “check the sharpness.” There are a number of ways to rehabilitate photos that are slightly soft, but image-editing expert Nathaniel Dodson insists that by using the technique in this tutorial, you’ll “get the best sharpening ever!”

A couple days ago we featured a tutorial on using Photoshop’s new “Select Subject” tool that provides one-click selections for prominent objects in a photo. While this unique tool is a real timesaver, it doesn’t always deliver perfect results.

One trick employed by experienced landscape photographers is to use long exposures to capture dramatic images of soft, flowing water and cotton-like clouds. This technique typically involves the use of neutral density (ND) filters to reduce the amount of light entering the camera, thereby permitting extended exposure times.
