About four years ago, Alvanas, a photographer, filmmaker, educator, digital artist, and postproduction retoucher, was attending a week-long advanced printing workshop at John Paul Caponigro’s studio. “The first day of portfolio review featured lots of prints of grand vistas from big film cameras—4x5s and 8x10s,” Alvanas says. “I showed on the second day, but I digitally projected my images.”

The first thing I do in a new country is get a prepaid SIM card for my phone. Sure, this means that I’m still connected, but the ability to address Google Maps, TripAdvisor, or Foursquare at any point far outweighs the negatives of being sucked back into the infinite void that is Facebook. Shiny skin can ruin an otherwise nice portrait, particularly when shooting outdoors on a hot summer day or indoors when you’re using warm lights. Thanks to this video tutorial, however, you can repair those shiny photos with some simple editing techniques using Photoshop or Lightroom.

This morning Microsoft introduced Pix, a free iPhone app designed to automatically enhance your images and improve upon Apple’s built-in camera app through the use of artificial intelligence, facial recognition, and other advanced technologies. The idea is that Pix is so sophisticated that it takes the guesswork out of smartphone photography.

Douglas Croft captured this incredible snowy vista from the top of the Aiguille du Midi, high above Chamonix, France. “We had been in the Alps for two weeks, but this is one of the highest vertical ascent cable cars in the world, taking us up to 12,602 feet, and now we were above the Alps,” Croft says about the location.
