There are lots of ways to shoot photos from a high angle to help you capture eye-popping images from an elevated perspective. Of course, you can try shooting aerial images from a drone but flying one can be tricky and drones are expensive (and tend to crash).

OK, before anyone gets too excited, we should note that this rare World War II Japanese “machine gun camera” did not shoot live rounds, or even dummy bullets. Rather, it was a camera mounted in a rifle-like housing used to capture images of whatever fell within the oversized sight on the device.

Fortunately for all his fans, Heaton just can’t sit still on the beach, and just happed to have a DJI Mavic Pro drone in his backpack.

Aerial photographer Chris Dahl-Bredine was one such dreamer, and while he’s not sure how big a role the flying dream played in his eventually becoming an ultralight pilot, he’s certain it was a significant factor. And, once he began flying, he reports—as do other pilots (the author included)—that the dream simply stopped. He considered becoming a licensed private pilot so he could fly light planes but once he experienced the thrill of ultralights, he realized it helped him recapture the dream: flying like a bird, wind in his face, view unencumbered by a cockpit.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officially refers to quadcopters as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) but they obviously have more in common with the kind of hobbyist’s radio-controlled aircraft that have been around since I was a member of the Poly Aeroneers in high school. Yet tech blogs and social media endlessly refer to quadcopters as “drones” when the only thing a General Atomics MQ-1 Predator and a DJI Phantom 1 have in common is that they’re capable of flight. But they’re not without some controversy.

If you’ve ever wondered why a group of tigers is called an “ambush,” the video below pretty much explains the nomenclature. The clip was captured by China Central Television (CCTV) while shooting aerial footage of captive Siberian tigers in the snow, when all of a sudden one of the massive beasts leapt up and yanked their drone out of the sky.

We’ve seen a lot of great imagery from the August 21st total solar eclipse, but this nine-minute video is really something special. Self-proclaimed “armchair aeroscience geek” Liem Bahnerman captured the amazing footage after launching a high-altitude balloon festooned with three still cameras and two action cams shooting video.
