Tamron USA, Inc. announced that
its new zoom lens, SP AF200-500mm F/5-6.3 Di LD (IF), won the prestigious Hot1
award. The 2004 Hot1 Awards were the biggest ever, with over 200 total entries
in more than 40 categories. This was the sixth consecutive year for the awards,
and the contest has grown in popularity and prestige in each year of its existence.
The awards are designed to evaluate and honor top-grade products for the professional
photography market. Professional Photographer magazine holds an open entry period
during which companies voluntarily enter products in various categories, providing
all pertinent product information directly. Professional Photographer editors
then audit the categories, make any necessary adjustments or changes, and submit
all the information to the panel of expert judges.

The Hot1 judging panel is made up of working professional photographers. These
photographers are selected for their specific knowledge of certain market segments
and asked to vote on product categories that fall within their area of expertise.
The judges are all respected professionals, well recognized in the industry.
To maintain the highest level of fairness, none of the judges are employed by
Professional Photographer magazine. For a variety of reasons, Professional Photographer
does not disclose the identity of the judges, though individual judges may chose
to identify themselves during the judging process. A plurality of votes determines
the winner of a category.

Tamron
USA, Inc. has announced the launch of a newly redesigned AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3
XR Di Aspherical (IF) MACRO (model A061), a high power zoom lens now featuring
"Di" (Digitally Integrated) design. The "Di" design
is achieved by 1) improving our BBAR coatings to a new multi-coating that
encompasses all of the benefits of the original but now further reduces
the ghosting and flare caused by aberrations, and 2) by further enhancing
our already stringent quality control system. The new AF28-300mm Di is
redesigned as a high power zoom lens now ideal for use with interchangeable-lens
digital cameras as well as film cameras. It provides an angle of view
equivalent to that of approx. 465mm ultra telephoto when used with a digital
camera and enables you to enjoy creative composition of images at the
28mm wideangle setting when used with a 35mm film camera. "SP"
(Super Performance) is a designation Tamron puts on lenses featuring superior
specifications and outstanding optical performance.

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, a how-to video must be as good as a book,
especially if it compresses the knowledge contained in a 45-minute lecture into
a concise, well-focused, viewer-friendly 4-minute format you can download to
your iPod or computer and view again and again. That's the exciting concept
behind the incisive, entertaining, and informative new podcasts posted in the

One look at the specs of this new Tamron zoom and you'll understand why
it's immediately attractive to anyone carrying around a digital SLR in
their day bag. Weighing in at around 15 oz and measuring just under 3x3.2",
the lens is quite the marvel of size for what it delivers in focal length and
aperture options. Indeed, if someone told me that a constant aperture, 17mm
wide lens would be this size a few years back I'd have thought they had
lost their optical marbles. To be fair, however, that 17mm is not really a 17mm
in 35mm equivalent, thus practical terms, and I wonder why lenses like this
are still labeled that way. This lens is only for APS-C sensors, which means
it has the "35mm equivalent" of a 27mm wide angle view and 80mm
tele.

Tamron's new 17-50mm zoom, available in Canon, Nikon, Konica
Minolta (read Sony), and Pentax (read Samsung) mounts is highly
portable and compact.
