Three years ago while looking for his next challenging project, Reuben Krabbe, a 25-year-old Canadian photographer, dreamt up the expedition that had brought a crew of nine—including Cody Townsend, Brody Leven and Chris Rubens, filmmaker Anthony Bonello, and photographer Bjarne Salén—to their frozen campsite, located in one of two places on earth with a perfect view of the total solar eclipse on March 20, 2015.

Today’s camera gear is faster than ever and much of it is tailor-made for capturing any sort of motion or movement. So then why do so many photographers struggle to shoot compelling images of action, adventure, and energy? Part of it has to do with timing and part of it has to do with composition. Your camera and lens can only do so much and there’s more to a great action shot than simply capturing the moment and making sure it’s in focus.

Namibia, located in Southwest Africa along the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the least populated countries in the world, second only to Mongolia. Its diversified, arid, and stark landscapes of desert, sand dunes, rugged coastline, mountains, and salt pans provide a home for some of the last nomadic tribes in Africa, and offer a unique blend of desert flora and fauna. For photographers, Namibia is the ideal destination in Africa to travel overland on a self-drive excursion to find the many photographic possibilities this desert country has to offer.

Everyone reading this has likely shot a sunset in their lifetime. And if you don’t mind getting up early, you’ve probably tried to capture a sunrise too. But how many of your images of sunrises and sunsets are truly exceptional?

To say that Chris Rainier's main subject as a documentary photographer is vast would be an understatement. Much of Rainier's work these days focuses on documenting the lives and cultures of indigenous people around the world.

We
are sad to announce that Carl Koch, inventor of the modular Sinar camera system,
died in late December at the age of 89. This Swiss photographer and inventor
introduced the revolutionary Sinar camera in 1948. Koch's primary motivation
was to offer professional photographers the latest technical refinements. He
was steadfastly successful with the logical implementation of his life's
motto: "What can be done better, shall be done better".

Additional milestones were the automation of the camera with the introduction
of a universal shutter for all lenses, selective exposure metering at the film
plane and the simplification of camera settings.

The education of the new generation of professional photographers was also a
major concern to Koch. He authored a series of textbooks and guidelines for
professional photography, of which Photo Know How'--a self-teaching
course for professional photographers that was translated into many languages
including Chinese and Russian--became a worldwide standard text. To this
day, Koch's principles still guide the philosophy of Sinar, the company
that he founded. The world of professional photography mourns the passing of
one of its great pioneers.

Carl Zeiss introduced the Distagon T* 2/25 ZE and ZF.2 moderate wide-angle lenses. The large image angle allows photographers to capture exciting perspectives. In many situations, a flash is an unwelcome feature - at family gatherings, in a museum or in a church for example. To capture the mood in such places, photographers gladly do without aggressive lighting and instead work with particularly high-speed lenses that enable short exposure times even under difficult lighting conditions.

Beginning in June 2006, the Carl Zeiss Camera Lens Division assumed full responsibility
for the distribution of its products in the United States and Canada. The division
is implementing this measure in preparation for the launch of the new ZF lenses
for Nikon SLR & DSLR cameras and other future product lines. The company's
new sales department will also be responsible for the Zeiss Ikon camera system
previously distributed by a partner. The product line available for this rangefinder
camera includes ZM lenses, a unique line of premium ZEISS M bayonet lenses.

Press Release  |  Dec 18, 2009  |

Zeiss has introduced a new series of lenses for the semi-professional market: the
ZF.2 with F bayonet for digital SLRs. Thanks to its electronic interface (CPU),
these new ZEISS lenses support all-important operations such as the automatic
mechanisms for time, aperture setting and program. The CPU also supports manual
exposure settings, including those for camera casings that are not
AI-compatible. Since the lens now transmits the EXIF data such as manufacturer,
date, metering system and exposure to the camera, photographers no longer need
to set the parameters manually.
