Spring time here in North Dakota is always heralded in for me by the annual gathering of Sharp-tailed Grouse on their leks, where the males dance and display for the females. It's a North American wildlife spectacle not to be missed, with lots of foot stomping, feather shaking, popping noises from those colorful sacs on their necks, and plenty of fighting as the very cryptic females sit on the sidelines and choose the fittest mate. A bit like a bird disco! The earlier the dance begins, the earlier spring will break the winter spell on the snow weary grasslands.
