At the base of the pylon in Kill Devil Hills, commemorating the first powered flights made by the Wright Brothers on December 17, 1903, a series of plaques remember earlier attempts to fly; these images, inset on the door to the memorial, serve as a sober backdrop to the achievement of the Wright Brothers in what was then Kitty Hawk.
