This photo of a beggar on an Italian street in Rome is called “Faceless and Alone.” Timing for the photo was perfect and happenstance as a wide path, void of people, had naturally occurred around the beggar. His separation from “accepted” members of society is further increased by the desaturation of colors in the world around him and the slight vignette that further draws attention solely to this poor and estranged man. Not showing any other heads or faces in the photo enhances the concept of the beggar being faceless and alone. Interestingly, the vast and empty space around him was filled with people just a moment after the photo was captured. Even then, however, the man remained “Faceless and Alone.”
This image is a sad reminder that even in our affluence there are still many in great need and widely separated from our mainstream society.
