I took the original black-and-white photo many years ago in Muir Woods, California. The camera (a Nikon F equipped with an f/2.8, 35 mm lens) was pre-focused, set to f/16, placed on the ground near the charred stump of the parent tree, pointed upward, and triggered using the self-timer. The exposed film (Plus X) was developed using a homemade fine-grain developer. More recently, the negative was scanned on an Epson V700 and the positive image processed with Nik Silver Effex Pro 2 in Photoshop. Photographed by Irwin H. Segel, Davis, California.
