While hiking in the foothills I stumbled upon this beautiful pattern in the exposed roots a big pine tree that had been blown over during a recent storm. I almost missed it and walked right by when I spotted the intricate lines in the wood out of the corner of my right eye. They were so unusual, like alien life forms. I took several photos including a few macro shots and later, back at home, I converted this image to Black & White to make the pattern even more pronounced.
