You asked for exploding volcanos so I thought I'd toss in a tornado for free Technically a waterspout since it is over water, this twister is generated by the violent reaction of the hot lava exploding into the cooler ocean water at the Waikupanaha ocean entry on the island of Hawaii in 2008. As the steam rises conditions were ripe for an occasional (about 1-2 an hour) waterspout dropping down from the cloud. The tour boat looks closer to the twister due to compression of the tele lens. Even so, the waterspouts were dancing around erratically . This fantastic event lasted just a few days, and then repeated several months later for a few days. Currently, 2015, Kilauea volcano is very calm. Shot with Nikon D200 Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 at 70mm Raw capture ISO 100 1/20 sec f2.8. Gitzo tripod. Mostly simple photoshop adjustments, but I did enhance the red area a little as the image was mostly monochromatic. As it got darker, more red was visible but there wasn't enough ambient light to see the rest of the scene.
