You asked for exploding volcanos so I thought I toss in a giant waterspout for added extremism. This event occurred at the Waikupanaha ocean entry of Kilauea volcano on Hawaii island in 2008. The extreme turbulence caused by the molten lava pouring and exploding into the ocean and rising steam and smoke and ash generated an occasional water spout dropping down from the plume. There is a tour boat visible but it is only moderately safe as the waterspouts danced erratically. The telephoto lens compresses the apparent closeness. The waterspouts lasted about 10-30 seconds and occurred about 1-2 per hour for a couple of days. i was living on the island and had shot a rodeo in the morning and drove a total of about 250 miles that day going to both adventures and back home for a long day.
