Megan is a Thyroid Cancer survivor, while Kelley survived Biphenotypic Leukemia. Both became friends at college before they kew each other's stories. MEGAN, from the interview I did with the girls for a project: "MEGAN: It is the best-worst thing that ever happened to me. I learned at 18 what most people take a lifetime to learn. My life was humming along, and the world was at my fingertips. And then it came to a screeching halt...Kelley and I joke with each other . . . at 18 we got it really bad, but at 39 we’ll be really healthy. "
When I asked them how they felt about having survived such a difficult experience at such a young age, they looked at each other, grabbed hands, got up on the fountain and jumped screaming for joy. I, of course made them do it 10 more times for the picture, but the first time was the best.
