Labor Day, 2014 started out cold and rainy down in the Lake Macdonald area in Glacier National Park. We got up around 4 a.m. in order to be at Logan Pass by sunrise. The fog became even thicker as we climbed up Going to the Sun Road and we began to lose hope that we'd get a good sunrise. We inched along as the fog became so thick it was difficult to see the center line of the highway. If you've been up that road, you know there is no margin for error when it comes to finding the edge of the road! Steep cliffs on climb above you on one side and fall sharply below you on the other. We finally arrived safely at Logan Pass and were greeted with a strong west wind that was pushing the fog over the pass like a shepherd herding sheep. I began to see hints of light to the east when a break in the fog would pass by and set up facing that general direction. All of a sudden, a faint glow became a glorious flash of orange as the St Mary Valley came in to view. It was over as soon as it began and soon the fog settled in thick once again and the relentless wind drove me back to the shelter of my car.
