One of the biggest "tricks" to good macro, is to find the light you want to capture and THEN, find things highlighted in that light. This stalk is a perfect example of that.
I shot this earlier in the morning, with my 100mm macro lens and my 6D set to f2.8, 1/250 and an ISO of 200. The giant fir behind the stalk made a perfect, dark background
