"Staggered Seating:" This is one of the upper levels of the abandoned Swastika Mine near Crown King, Arizona. It is a bit of a solitary hike to get to. I have visited it several times over the years and each time, the chairs have been in different positions. Shortly after the Gladiator Fire, it was flooded and, in fact, this closest chair was tipped onto its back and buried in fairly deep mud; hence, its coating that still remains. This time, the chairs were facing opposing directions; I did not move them at all. I found I could play around with my off-camera lighting to emphasize the shadows to make it appear that the shadows themselves were rising out of their seats. There is a metal gate at the entrance, which creates the jailed-in feel in contrast to the views of the mountains beyond. The view to the back of the mine was pitch-dark and eerily so. I usually don't get too weirded out in places like this, but for some reason, I got a little perturbed to stay in there longer. And it wasn't anything to do with the bats that I knew were flying around ahead. It was that pitch-black behind me that I was almost afraid to shine my light on. I had to exit and enter this mine in pieces-- the little opening between the rock wall and the gate meant that I had to first put my tripod, then my camera bag, then I could carefully squeeze through. But I couldn't do it while wearing and carrying my gear! Nikon D810, Nikkor 24-70 @ 24mm, ISO 64, f/11, 1/60 second, SB910 flash and auxiliary handheld flashlights. (I needed all the light I could get; it was so dark!)
