In April 1986 many towns and villages around Chernobyl were abandoned due to a nuclear disaster resulting from a fire in one of the reactors. In the days before the internet and social media, information about the disaster was hard to come by. Today its possible to visit the exclusion zone (its the size of Luxembourg) and see the abandoned villages and their empty buildings. While looking inside a house in a small village near the town of Chernobyl, it was the personal items that really brought home the human impact of the mass abandonment of whole villages and communities.
