While visiting friends in the Carolinas last winter, I ventured out early one morning to a swampy area I had noticed the day before. With the cold temps, this primeval forest had become a winter wonderland with razor thin ice and reflections of the trees and stumps. But as with much of beauty, it was fleeting--within 30 minutes or so the ice had melted!
