I had gone out to the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge at Deland, Florida to photograph our resident Sandhill Cranes and their chicks. This photo was from the second day I went. The cranes were feeding on one of the dykes that separate the ponds for water fowl. Sandhill cranes can be very nonchalant about human beings. The cranes showed no nervousness when I was within about 30 feet and continued to move in my direction as they fed. Eventually the came up to me and walked around me as if I was just a particularly ugly sandhill crane. As they ambled on I came along with them. At no point did they show any awareness that I was even there and the two chicks got to within a few feet of me. It was one of the best "wildlife moments" I have ever had. This was shot with a Canon 70D with a 100-400 Canon zoom lens at 400mm. Given the 1.6 multiplication factor this was the equivalent of 640mm. The exposure was f/8 at 1/400 second at an ISO of 400.
