During a recent trip to New Jersey, I made a quick run over to Long Beach Island, aka LBI. Mid morning may not be the ideal time to take photos, but in my case, as an amateur photo enthusiast, I take photos when available time permits. Upon arriving at the beach front, I could see that the raw power of the surf was begging to be photographed. I used the parallel wooden jetty piers to help draw the viewer's attention to the crashing waves. The original color photograph was very pretty, but I kept thinking that something was not quite right. I determined that there were so many color variations within the scene that it appeared all of these colors were competing for attention and detracting from the crashing waves. There were different hues of blues from the sky and the water, different hues from the light colored sand, mid and dark tone browns of the wooden jetty, and dark grays and blacks of the rocks. There was also hues of green from sea moss on the rocks and jetty. My goal was to focus attention on the Raw Power of the surf. By turning the photo into B&W, I was better able to meet this objective.
