Machias Seal Island, in the Gulf of Maine is the breeding ground for the Atlantic Puffins two months each summer. This photo shows a trio of puffins "billing" which is when two or more puffins rub their beaks together, sort of like puffin kissing. Billing is believed to be a way in which the puffins renew their friendship. They approach each other while wagging their heads from side to side, and then rattle their beaks together. This is also a part of courtship behavior, and is repeated often during the mating season. After mating their colorful beak plates are shed.
