We were in Kaktovik, Alaska to photograph the Polar Bears last October. While there, other professional photographer's had placed cameras in the whale bone pile to photograph the bears as they came in to feed on the remains. Note that the local natives are allowed to take three whales per year for subsistence. They butcher the whales and distribute the meat amongst the residents. The bone and scraps are left in a pile and the bears come in to feed until the bay freezes over and they then leave to find their main food of seals.
Early in the morning a one or two year old cub found one of the cameras and was able to free it from a large bone where it had been attached with a bungee cord. He suddenly stood up with the cord in his mouth and the camera hanging in front of him like a tourist on vacation.
