The diet-toxicity hypothesis affirms that poison dart frogs do not produce toxins endogenously, but instead concentrate and secrete alkaloids present in their arthropod prey. This specimen housed in captivity at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo is likely less toxic than its wild brethren due to its altered diet, but one still best look and avoid touching.
