This photograph was taken in the Jao Concession in Botswana's Okavango Delta. The evening before we had been searching for a pride of lions we knew to be in the area, but we only found them very late in the day. The light was too poor for quality photography. We decided to get up extra early the next morning and return to the pride, which was protecting a kill and so was unlikely to move overnight. We arrived just as the sun was beginning to rise and the lions with it. We spent two hours with them, watching their "morning routine," which for these two lions included considerable rough housing. The image suggests the two were engaged in a fierce fight, but the reality is that these siblings were just enjoying some morning playtime before heading back into the shade for a long nap. Taken with a Canon 1DX, 600mm at f/5.6 and 1/2500 with ISO 800.
