An arborvitae shrub at the J.C. Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh NC presented this psychedelic vision to me, and I used a 105 macro lens with a ring flash to achieve the even lighting and fine detail suggesting why the name "arborvitae" was borrowed by anatomists to describe the cerebellar white matter of the human brain.
I applied a slight dark vignetting and very slight 3d effect with the "spherize" tool in Photoshop 7. Conversion from color to b&w was done in Silver Efex Pro 2.
