In 1972, the Koocanusa Bridge won the American Institute of Steel Construction's Most Beautiful Bridge Award in the Long Span category. Construction on the bridge began in 1970. Today this bridge serves a vital link between the West Kootenai region of Montana and Highway 37 which provides access to Libby and Eureka, Montana. In this Picture This Assignment there was a caution to be careful photographing bridges due to traffic. Traffic is not really a concern on the Koocanusa Bridge. Local residents and logging trucks are currently the prime users of the bridge. The West Kootenai area suffered as a result of the Montana fires this past summer and the usable logs are being salvaged and put to good use. My own personal connection to the bridge involves the joy I receive riding over it on my bicycle and watching the ever changing scenery.
