The Prairie Pothole Region here in North Dakota is a landscape of grasslands, agricultural fields and wetlands, and is mostly comprised of soils that can quickly either be too wet or too dry. As the saying goes, we are often only a few days away from either a flood or a drought! So a huge focus in summer is how much rain falls. Most everyone owns a rain gauge and it's actually a point of pride or disappointment to compare how much rain fell at your place vs. at your neighbor's. Many mornings a heavy dew coats everything also, and my can nature artfully arrange it even on simple blades of grass.
