The near-infrared light on Mabry Mill along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia generates a high-contrast image of the mill and its reflection in the mill pond. Chlorophylls in the grass and leaf vegetation has a relative high reflectance in the near-infrared because of internal leaf scattering of the radiation and essentially no absorption. Consequently, the false color of infrared photographs gives a surreal atmosphere to the image.
