A pair of red-shouldered hawks built their nest in a live oak tree adjacent to the six-story administration building of Jesuit High School New Orleans. We called them Annette and Dennis, names plucked out of the air. The nest, built virtually overnight in spring 2014 in one of the oak trees that line both sides of Banks Street, is slightly above eye level if you looked out one of the windows on the fourth floor. But Jesuit's rooftop provided unobstructed views of the nest. As the "wild photographer" at Jesuit, I often went up to the roof that spring to chronicle the ordinary lives of two extraordinary birds living in a noisy and heavily trafficked (foot and auto) urban jungle. One of the first shots I got was of Dennis (this is a presumption because I'm no ornithologist) gracefully negotiating the maze of branches and wires with Jesuit's physical education building in the background. The eight images of the hawks were taken using a Canon EOS 7D and, with three exceptions, a 300 mm f/2.8 Canon lens. "Hawks at P.E." was taken on 2-24-2014 at 5:14 p.m. with the 300 mm lens at 1/800s, f/2.8, ISO 1250, auto white balance.
