While visiting Machias Seal Island this past summer, I was able to spend two days photographing Atlantic Puffins and speaking to the lighthouse keeper and researchers. I saw first hand results of what climate change means for our wild things and our planet. Due to excessive freshwater melt in Greenland, Puffins in the region suffered immensely during the breeding season. Only 12% of hatchlings fledged, and of that 12%, none were expected to make it to breeding age. This was on the back of the previous low fledge of 14% just two years before. Food scarcity due to changes in the water are to blame. In learning this, I sought to humanize these birds, and shoot them in a way that a studio photographer might with his subjects. I'm a life long advocate for Puffins now, and will most likely make a yearly trip to document their struggles and show the world the consequences of our actions.
