First Sunrise (of 2016)
Peralta Canyon in Arizona's Superstition Mountains is one of my favorite hikes, both for the workout it provides and the never tiring scenery along the way. New Years day was going to be a busy day along the Peralta, so I got my usual early start and by 7:30 ish, the parking lot was already filling up. I had the trail all to my self in the dim pre-dawn and it was super cool to look back to see the morning's haze settle in and highlight the mountains and canyons below me. When the sun finally decided to make its appearance, it broke the edge of the mountain and made such a lighting distinction between the parts of the canyon in the sunlight vs those parts still shaded, that I was momentarily stunned by the scene in front of me.... a very special moment in the newly born year, 2016.
