My uncle had just passed away a couple days before this photo was taken. I went to stay with my grandfather because he was taking it really hard. One of his biggest fears was realized, he had to bury and say good bye to one of his children. I often found him staring off into space, thinking. The whole week was trying for him and the rest of the family, but he got through it and so did the rest of the family. Everyone was there for each other.
I used my iphone to capture this moment because I felt like I couldn't really capture the raw emotion using my DSLR. I feel in these certain situations, the iphone can be so essential. People will respond differently if they know you are photographing them, if you can take it without them knowing to capture the emotion do it, but do let them know you took the picture afterwards.
