The photo shows a group of visitors in a Zodiac approaching Point Wild, a spit on the north coast of Elephant Island, Antarctica. Visible on Point Wild are a small colony of Chinstrap penguins and a monument commemorating the 1916 rescue of 22 survivors of the Shackleton Endurance Expedition. The monument is a bust of the Chilean navy ship captain who rescued the men. A second Zodiac is visible on the far side of the point. The mountainous nature of Elephant Island itself is apparent from the snow-covered rock slopes in the background. The photo was taken with a Nikon D300 and a Nikkor 16–85 mm VR lens at 85 mm. The exposure was f/11 and 1/640 sec (ISO 400). Adjustments of color, tone, contrast, etc., were made using Photoshop. Nik Color Efex Pro 4 (Detail Extractor) was used to bring out the texture of the ice and snow. The photo was taken by Irwin H. Segel, Davis, California on January 15, 2010.
