Mei Xiang is one of three giant pandas living at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington D.C. Pandas are a vulnerable species native to south central China. Giant pandas have been used as diplomatic gifts by the People's Republic of China since the 1950's and are currently offered to zoos around the world on 10 year loans. As a conservation-reliant species, their numbers are sustained through human intervention.
