I photographed this Orangutan at the Miami Zoo in April of 2008. I was with a large family group, and really didn't get a chance to look at this animal before I downloaded and processed it. When I did, I began to question the quality of this primate's life. Was he suffering in some way? In pain maybe? Lonely? Homesick? I realize these are human emotions, and maybe none of these things were true, but, looking at this animal, I am convinced that it was experiencing, at the very least, sadness. This image has haunted me. I've never forgotten it. It's impact today is just as strong today as it was 7 years ago. My emotional response to this photo is something I've never been able to accomplish - help.
