Humpback whales encircle schools of herring and blow bubbles to constrict them into masses of prey that are consumed all at once. The bubbles appear on the surface just before the group of whales swims, mouths open, to the surface right through the mass of small fish. This fortunate image was taken in Chatham Strait near Baranof Island in southeast Alaska. Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM with tele-extender EF 2X II at 560mm. Exposure was 1/1000 sec at f8, ISO 400.
