The Atlantic Puffin is experiencing some serious regional issues in regards to breeding, specifically in terms of feeding themselves and their young. Large amounts of fresh water ice melt is travelling down the Labrador Current, depositing large amounts of fresh water into the ocean. This water has no real nutrients for ocean life, and therefore the fish Puffins often feed upon must either live deeper than the Puffin's can dive or relocate to other areas where nutrient dense water is more plentiful. Having only one egg per year, large percentage failure can be devastating to these birds. For Machias Seal Island, where I visited, there was on a 12% fledge this year, with none of the young expected to reach breeding age. I went there to photograph them uniquely, and decided upon portrait style shots, similar to how one might shoot a model and I found opportunities in spades! I'm now a tireless advocate for both the Atlantic Puffin, and climate change as a result!
