I like your determination and interest in macro shots. With 200,000 shots on my Canon, don't be upset if I throw some pointers your way for upcoming Spring photos.
I usually always have my external flash with me and have a flash modification I swear by. Kraft Diner box!!! Yup, lined it with tin foil and have a flap on the open end which reflects the light straight in front of the lense.
Reason? Depth needs more aperture and more aperture needs more light and more light needs a faster shutter speed which gives me a nice, crisp, deep result.
Lots of trial and error, but good fun to play around with.
Works great with insects too.
