If you’re old enough to remember the New York Yankees legendary catcher and coach Yogi Berra you probably recall his famous quote, "It's déjà vu all over again.” With that in mind we thought we’d share this somewhat old 2015 tutorial because it’s just so darn cool.

It sounds like a reference to dull Halloween costumes, but I’ve always regarded unsharp masking as the Cadillac option for beefing up the acutance of my photos. Admittedly, this is probably just a reaction to the fact that unsharp masking has a complicated dialog box in Photoshop, and my reptilian brain is dazzled by lots of controls.

Earlier this week we posted a simple primer explaining how a camera’s metering system works. In the quick video below, pro Brian Worley examines the Shutter Priority mode and demonstrates when and how you can use this setting as a creative tool.

Q. For years I had planned to “upgrade” from my camera with an APS-C sensor to a camera with a full-frame or even midsize sensor. Since I’m retired, I no longer print my photos or try to sell them. I have some very nice full-frame lenses from my film camera days, so I could use them with a full-frame camera. But I display my photos only electronically on a TV or photo frame, which can’t display all of the image data that a larger sensor could capture. So, wouldn’t a larger sensor just be overkill?

Photography is all about light, and unless you understand the inner workings of your camera’s metering system and know how to arrive at correct exposures you’re never going to be pleased with your photographs.

Most photographers are familiar with the so-called “Exposure Triangle” that consists of Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO. But while there is plenty of discussion about how to use shutter speed and aperture settings for different effects, the proper use of ISO doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.

Photographing wildlife in their natural habitat has always been both challenging and rewarding. Whether you develop a business selling the use of the images or leading workshop tours, this field requires a special combination of passion and patience. In this article, we look at how and where wildlife photos can be sold as well as prospects to pursue and pitfalls to avoid. Special thanks to our four contributors: Sean Crane; Barbara Fleming (Fleming Safari Company, LLC); Eric Horan (Lowcountry Photo Safaris); and Josh Patterson.

Zoos, wildlife parks and farms are some of my favorite places to recommend taking pictures, especially when you are looking to build your portfolio with a diverse subject matter. They offer many opportunities to learn how to photograph rare animals as well as teach you how to cope with challenging environments and locations, similar to what you would encounter if you were on safari on the savannahs of Tanzania or tracking tigers in the jungles of Borneo.

Back in the days when 35mm cameras were king, photographers typically chose film to suit the situation at hand; perhaps Kodachome 25 or Velvia 50 for landscapes with vivid colors, and something like Kodak Portra 400 for portraits when a less punchy look was desired.

A common question among digital photographers is, “How much better is a Raw file than an image captured as a JPEG?” The video below attempts to answer this question “once and for all,” so take a look and see if you agree.

Many photographers rely on their camera’s sophisticated metering system to provide the “correct” exposure for the scene at hand. While this approach works well under a wide variety of lighting conditions, there are times when even the smartest camera can be fooled.

Today’s sophisticated cameras feature a variety of shooting modes from Manual to fully automatic Program, and a couple others in between. In this photography primer you'll learn all you need to know about these different settings and which mode is best for capturing different types of scenes.

This may be strange to hear from a travel photographer, but I can make a case that location isn’t everything—light is. And I’d build my argument on the fact that the right light brings out the best in any location.
