Giving a more modern twist to tradition, a team of digital imaging specialists from the Smithsonian Institute created a 3D portrait of President Barack Obama using eight high-resolution sports cameras, six wide-angle cameras, and 50 custom-designed LED lights.

The first thing I did after receiving Flashpoint’s 180 battery-powered monolight was shoot a few tests to get a feel for how well the unit performed. Although impressed, more so than with some other battery-powered units I’ve used, at one point while shooting with a Canon EOS 60D, a BG-E9 battery grip, and an EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens, I thought, “Wow, why is this camera so heavy?” That was when the “Small Monolight/Small Camera” concept was born and I decided to shoot this review using a Micro Four Thirds camera. And why not, so I worked with my Panasonic Lumix G5 for the test.

Designed with many of the same features that made the original Odin so popular, the Phottix Odin II TTL UI and control system are now faster and easier to use. This updated model offers a 2.5 GHz frequency (with a range of 100m), 32 channels (with a digital ID code), 5 groups (A, B, C, D, E), group buttons and a convenient control dial for fast power changes, a manual power control (1/1 to 1/256), a flash zoom control, high speed sync (up to 1/8000s), an AF assist beam, a modeling light control (Indra500 only), second curtain sync and a TTL power control +/- 3EV. 

The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) member magazines recently convened for their General Assembly to vote for the best photo and imaging products launched by the industry in the last 12 months. The voting took place during the General Assembly that was held in spring, 2014, in Vancouver, Canada.
